Exploring Devon, UK

Last weekend was hot hot hot in the UK and myself and my housemate decided to get out of Exeter and explore some of the surrounding countryside. As always, my stomach comes first and we decided on a traditional pub lunch to begin our mini adventure. Cueย The Nobody Inn, a quaint country pub set in the village ofย Doddiscombsleigh only six miles from the centre of Exeter. The low beams and rustic interior are perfect for a winter’s evening and the garden overlooking the Devonshire hills (head image) is an idyllic place to sit in the sun and eat, drink and be merry. The foot is equally as hearty and delicious as the surroundings you are in and as a country girl, this is my dream lunch.

From there we drove through country lanes, with no real direction until over the trees we spotted a castle in the distance. This amazing venue is called Haldon Belvedere and can be rented out for private events, functions and weddings. With well kept gardens and footpaths surrounding the castle, the spring is the best time to see this place with Bluebells on the ground and blossom on the trees.

After drinking in this romantic environment we decided to go on the hunt for another countryside gem, coming across Canonteign Falls – a mixture of natural and man-made Victorian waterfalls set in a beautiful woodland. It’s a hefty climb to the top on very uneven footing, but it is so worth it to experience the nature on the way up and to see the breathtaking views over the hills beyond. As well as the waterfall trail there are lakes, Victorian gardens, a playground and a cafe, making it the perfect place of a family day out.

I love getting out of the city centre to explore the South West. Not having a car limits my chances to get out on days like this but when I do I enjoy it so much!
